Out of all the characters in the show, the plot mostly revolves around Melfina, the bio-android that communes directly with the Outlaw Star in order to help navigate and pilot it. She is an incredibly powerful warrior and a vital asset, as she has in-depth knowledge of the Kei Pirates, who are after Gene and the Outlaw Star. Obviously there was some trickery to land her on the crew, and she adds a sort of straight shooter energy. ‘Twilight’ Suzuka is one of the more serious members of the Outlaw Star crew, being an assassin sent to kill a friend of Gene’s. He’s usually the hacker and mechanic for the crew, and ends up personalizing one of the maintenance robots on the Outlaw Star.

Jim Hawking provides an immediate character foil to Gene, and is often telling him off for sleeping late or pulling risky stunts. Jim’s name seems to be a pretty clear reference to the protagonist of Treasure Island, precocious youth yearning for adventure Jim Hawkins. Gene’s partner while working on Sentinel III is Jim Hawking, a ten-year-old genius. But this consumes a lot of energy, and Aisha is frequently seen comically gobbling down food in order to regain her strength. Using this ability to its fullest extent transforms her into a tiger-type creature, and many Ctarl Ctarl lose their senses of themselves during these transformations, so it’s not done too often. One of the abilities of the Ctarl Ctarl and thereby Aisha is the ability to activate a sort of primal strength, which increases her already formidable abilities and turns her into something more animal than human, as her ears grow, her nails elongate, and she even grows a tail. While intensely strong and more durable than humans, she carries a massive ego and often acts rashly, with detrimental results. Aisha, as fans may recall, was in charge of finding the Galactic Leyline for the Ctarl Ctarl Empire, but after letting Hilda escape was demoted to an ambassador stationed on the outlaw hangout of Blue Heaven. Like Gene there are also plenty of jokes involving Aisha Clanclan, alien catgirl and disgraced member of the Ctarl Ctarl Empire. Gene’s desire for revenge against the pirates that killed his dad also feeds into his eagerness and hesitance for traveling through space. His dad forced him into an escape pod during the attack, which more or less stranded him on Sentinel III. His simultaneous fear and desire for space travel comes from losing his father to space pirates as a teenager. He also drinks quite a bit to control his nausea while flying. He’s much more in his element on land than launching a spacecraft, yet he’s the de-facto pilot for this cutting-edge spaceship.ĭespite or because of his cool-guy nature, Gene is a bit of a womanizer and is often accused of being a pervert. A running gag and eternal source of irony is that Gene, the cool-as-ice space outlaw, gets incredibly nauseous every time he’s in a ship heading to space. The tone in Outlaw Star also sets it apart from other anime like it, as there’s a lot of comedy mixed in with the serious content.

#GENE STARWIND NAKED SERIES#
Used in the series for attacking and boarding ships, the arms on many ships in Outlaw Star help to develop a sense of physicality for the pilots during intense space-fighting scenes. But an interesting addition to many ships in the series are robotic arms, often referred to as ‘Grappler’ arms. But then again, in the vacuum of space it stands to reason that you don’t always need the most aerodynamic design. While some are sleek and jet-like, many of the ships in Outlaw Star have a more bulbous shape and while stylish, don’t seem like the most aerodynamic crafts. One of the ways that Outlaw Star stands out is in the design of the various spaceships. The series’ style and setup makes it feel very similar to that of Cowboy Bebop, and the two have been compared to each other in the past. The series follows Gene and his crew as they search for the fabled Galactic Leyline and uncover the secret past of Melfina, a bio-android designed to directly interface with the Outlaw Star. Through a run-in with an Outlaw named ‘Hot Ice’ Hilda, Gene winds up the pilot of the spaceship XGP15A-II, later renamed to the titular Outlaw Star. The show follows the adventures of Gene Starwind, a gun for hire that runs a scrap shop with 11-year-old Jim Hawkings on the somewhat podunk planet of Sentinel III. In the age-old conflict of what is cooler: an outlaw, an astronaut, or a pirate? Outlaw Stardared to say ‘What about a combination of all of those?’ Outlaw Star was originally a manga series that ran between 19, but North American fans will most likely remember the anime adaptation more, as the manga was never translated to English.
